Home Based Sales Business
In order to succeed with any home based sales business and become a money maker we need to
understand and be comfortable with the sales part of the business.
Unless you are able to sell you will never build a successful business.
The good news is that it is easy to sell and you can become a great salesperson. In fact, you are already a
great salesperson. You are just not aware of it!
What does the term selling mean to you? We all talk about sales and selling but you may be surprised to know that selling often
means something totally different to different people.
Some people hate the idea of selling. Why? Because they think they cannot sell or are not good at it. They often have a picture in their
minds of this big bully trying to convince someone to buy his product. A big bully that will simply not take no for an answer and will tell
the customer anything as long as he gets the sale. If this is what selling is all about then I would also hate it...
Fact: You do not need to be a big bully to succeed with a home based sales business. In fact, it is
very unlikely that a bully will become a great money maker with his own home based sales business.
Do not make the mistake of stereo-typing sales people in only one category. It takes all kinds of people to make this a wonderful world and
although you may not have the same type of personality or attitude as the local second-hand car dealer it does not mean that he is or always
will be a better sales person than you.
We are all born with the ability to sell.
Let's start at the beginning...We are all born with the ability to sell. Without the ability to sell none of us would have made it through
school. When a baby is crying he is selling. He may be telling his mom or dad that he is tired and needs a rest. He may be telling his
parents that he is hungry or thirsty or needs a new diaper. He knows that if he persists he will get what he needs. He instinctively knows
what effect his warm smile has on his parents and that he can just about get away with anything.
Selling is getting someone else to do what we want them to do.
A teenager trying to convince his parents to take him to a party is busy selling the party to his parents. A student trying to convince her
parents to go to Hawaii on holiday is selling a holiday to her parents. A graduate going for a job interview is selling himself and his
abilities.
Selling is one of our most natural abilities. We are all born with what it takes to build a successful
home based sales business.
Why do so many people hate the idea of selling?
It has to do with ego and our fear of being rejected. This fear is normally born somewhere during our childhood years.
Let's illustrate this with an example:
Assume your child asks you for a new toy. You can either agree or refuse to buy it for him. If he is able to convince you, even after a long
period of time, it will reinforce his sales ability.
On the other hand, if you make him feel bad or guilty asking you for a new toy and refuse to buy it for him it has the opposite effect. He
may perceive it as rejection and may be reluctant to ask you for a toy again in the near future for fear of being rejected again.
Does this mean that you should agree to any and all demands made by your children? No. Obviously not. However, the way in which you decline
requests may have a lasting impact on your child and affect his confidence in himself.
Our childhood years condition us in many ways for adulthood and we carry many of our childhood experiences with us when we become adults. The
way in which you were treated by your parents may determine your ability to run a home based sales business and prevent you from becoming a
money maker, unless you are able to realize this and change your attitude.
Most people are actually very nice, even to sales people.
You may have already heard about the story of the man and his jack. Even if you have, it is a good story to hear again as it has a valuable
lesson for all of us.
Here goes...
A man gets a flat tire while driving in a rural area late one night. As he wants to change the tire he
realizes that he does not have a jack with him. Looking around he sees some farm lights burning in the distance. He decides to walk over to
the farm house and ask the farmer if he can borrow his jack. While he is walking he gets a bit worried that it is getting too late to bother
the farmer. He imagines that the farmer may get upset being disturbed by a complete stranger at night. The more he walks the more convinced
he becomes that the farmer will not be willing to help him and may even chase him away. He eventually arrives at the farm house and rings the
door bell. Nothing happens. Maybe the farmer is already sleeping, he thinks. Maybe the farmer is looking for his gun, he wonders. After a
short while the farmer opens the door and without even giving the farmer an opportunity to say anything be blurts out "you and your damn
jack!".
Remember the above example every time you have unrealistic fears of selling and being rejected by your potential home based sales business
customers. Most people are actually very nice, even to sales people. However, you will always find some people that are never happy. Don't
take it personally.
You will never get along with all people. This is normal. It's not personal.
There are more than six billion people on this planet. You will never get along with all of them. Some will be very nice and others you will
dislike without even knowing why. It is normal.
Any home based sales business owner will get in contact with some really great customers AND with some really difficult customers. Someone
once told me that business is all about managing problems. It sounded a bit negative to me at the time but I think he had a valid point. If
it was easy and all people were nice we would all have a lot more competition.
Being confident in your own ability to sell is the first and most important step towards building a home
based sales business. It is the foundation of the business.
There are many things you can do to improve or fine tune your ability to sell. Even if you do not consider yourself to be a good sales person
at the moment there is a lot of information and training courses available that you can only benefit from.
A home based sales business can only offer customers either products, services or both. It is as simple as that. It is up to you to decide
what type of product or service or product you want to offer your customers.
Furthermore, as already mentioned in the
money maker advice home page, there are three types of businesses:
- Online - A business that only sells or promotes products and/or services over the
internet.
- Offline - All other businesses involved in selling or promoting products and/or services.
- Combo - A business that sells or promotes products and/or services both online and
offline.
Start with the basics. Many people make the mistake of going of in all directions at once when
starting a home based sales business. This is not the best way to become a money maker.
- Decide on a product or service you would like to offer customers.
- Decide on a suitable type of business - online, offline or combo.
- Compile a business plan sample.
Only after you have followed the above-mentioned three steps should you actually start working on building your own home based sales
business, knowing that you are building a business on a solid foundation, a business that will make you a money maker.
