Google PageRank Algorithm And How It Works
PageRank is used by Google to indicate the importance of a web page.
According to Google:
"Google counts the number of votes a page receives as part of its PageRank assessment, interpreting a link from page
A to page B as a vote by page A for page B. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages
"important."
Every single web page indexed by Google is awarded a PageRank between 0 to 10. The higher the number the more important the
web page.
Why is PageRank important?
There is a correlation between the importance and relevance of a web page and search engine listings. In other words, "important" and "relevant"
pages are normally placed higher in search engine results for a specific keyword.
Note: Do not make the mistake of focusing too much on PageRank.

PageRank may only be one of 200 factors Google takes into account to determine relevancy, but it is certainly a very important
factor in Google's Algorithm.
The following direct quote from Google cannot leave any doubt about the importance of the Google PageRank Algorithm:
"The heart of our software is PageRank™, a system for ranking web pages developed by our founders Larry Page and Sergey
Brin at Stanford University. And while we have dozens of engineers working to improve every aspect of Google on a daily basis, PageRank continues
to play a central role in many of our web search tools".

Note: Many webmasters try to outsmart Google by using various frowned-upon techniques to gain backlinks and increase the PageRank of
their web pages. This is not a very good idea! Google can distinguish between "natural links" and "unnatural
links"...
